Week 8
Discussion Lead
I was the discussion lead for this week, and I led the two chapters of Understanding Comics and talked about how the different use of panels affects the perception of time, and how this works together with the combination of words and pictures to create different visual storytelling experiences.
The link for my presentation is here.
During the presentation, I provided different examples of American and Japanese comics that give the audience a variety of storytelling experiences.
Early DC & Marvel comics, which often depicted a lot of things going on in one page with a big amount of dialogues.
Recent DC & Marvel comics, which tells less story every page but put more effort on making the pages visually appealing.
Comics by Fujiko F Fujio, which also depicts a lot of things going on in one page, but in a very easy-going manner that makes them easily understood even without understanding the dialogue.
Pages of battle scenes from the manga Neon Genesis Evangelion, which use irregularly-shaped panels to create a quick and harsh fighting effect.
Also pages from the manga Neon Genesis Evangelion, but depicting a very different atomsphere. The use of empty and quiet-looking scenes and large panels creates a sense of calmness and a freeze of time.
Pages of the manga Cardcaptor Sakura, which give examples of using layers of visual effects (flowers, glowing spots) above or outside of the panel to create a special storytelling experience full of emotions.
UX Design Part: 1 - Choosing a problem area
The area I chose for this assignment is making NYU websites easier for people with reading or learning disabilities to gain information.
When I enrolled in NYU, the process of getting all kinds of information from different sites of the NYU website gave me a lot of anxiety, and as a person with ADHD, I believe that I would not be the only one who suffered from this experience. Therefore, I wish to redesign some sites and give them better user experiences, or implement some tools like AI summarization and information gathering in these sites, to make things less stressful for people to learn more about NYU.
